                                              Following Traditions

A little Indian boy was watching his father, who had just received his eagle bone whistle. This whistle is given to the elders. His father was telling his son about the whistle and of its importance. The boy listened to his father with great interest. When the father finished talking to his son, he walked away. The little Indian boy then picked up a straw and began to copy what he had seen his father doing. Thus the name "Following Traditions".

             Heritage of the Past

In 1992, the original photographs were taken at the Pendleton Roundup. Tom had a special place in his heart for these two photographs.

Being a Viet Nam veteran and the lack of patriotism since the Viet Nam war, left him empty. But by seeing the Native American culture of this country, welcome all veterans of all wars; to march at every grand entry at every Pow Wow, with the American flag has left a tremendous feeling of patriotism that was so lacking in the years past.

In the spring of 2001, five months prior to 9/11, we brought this piece out, Heritage of the Past, in hopes that people would understand the patriotism that never left the Native American culture. As a Viet Nam veteran, seeing the unity and the patriotism of this country today, makes me proud to be an American.
